Welcome!
My name is Jason Custer and I am an Assistant Professor of English at Minnesota State University Moorhead. This website developed out of my thesis research into how to bring videogames into the composition classroom in a framework I refer to as "videogame-infused pedagogy," an attempt to synthesize composition theory and game theory by mapping these similarities onto composition pedagogy in accessible ways for a range of writing instructors.
Currently, I define videogame-infused pedagogy as:
Currently, I define videogame-infused pedagogy as:
- Teaching composition by actively using games inside the classroom.
- Focusing on freely available games and those which do not require advanced computers.
- Bringing the research of James Gee and Ian Bogost together with the Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing to target specific learning goals and outcomes.
- Attempting to provide several ways for a range of instructors to use games in the classroom.
Site Tour/Explanation
If you click through the links above, you will see some of the information I discuss in my scholarship on the facets of videogame-infused pedagogy. Of particular interest to you might be: a list of freely available games for your classroom, my new segment on what I'm calling "gaming topoi" that consists of topics I cover in my course using videogames along with the links to the games and activities relevant to the topics at hand, additional links to free software for accessing games and game creation software, and my personal course materials for my constantly evolving ENC 1145 course: "It's Dangerous to go Alone! Take This: Writing About the Rhetoric of Videogames."
I've made some dramatic design and content revisions here, so if you're visiting again after not being present for some time, fear not! Everything is still here, and more! Materials related to citations and presentations have all been moved to the Scholarship page, which also features a direct link to my thesis work, and my tab focused on the ENC 1145 Arcade that showcases my students' games is now located in the Course Materials section of the site, to de-clutter the navigation bar above. That all said, I would also like to encourage you to visit my professional portfolio to learn more about my outside research interests and teaching experience!
Thanks again for stopping by!
